Doug Ryan Review: OutdoorMaster Dolphin II Electric Pump

Doug Ryan Review: OutdoorMaster Dolphin II Electric Pump

Outdoor Master Dolphin 2 review

Repost from Adventure Gear Insider

The worst part about using an inflatable paddle board is inflating it. Cheap paddle boards come with hand pumps that barely work. Pumping up a board with a single action hand pump makes you exhausted before you even start paddling. An electric pump is the solution and one of the best SUP accessories you can buy. The Outdoor Master Dolphin 2 electric SUP pump is a low cost, small, pump that can reliably inflate your board up to 20 psi. Keep reading to get the complete story on the Outdoor Master Dolphin 2 pump.

Features of the Outdoor Master Dolphin 2 Pump

We really like the electric SUP pumps by Outdoor Master. We have been using the Shark 2 and Whale for a while now and love them both. I rarely ever hand pump a paddle board since getting them. They are both pricey and not that small. The Outdoor Master Dolphin 2 is a cheaper alternative that is small and lightweight. It is only 2 lbs and small enough to easily fit inside any inflatable paddle board bag. It can still inflate boards up to 20 psi.

What does the Dolphin 2 give up? It does not have an internal cooling fan but it can still pump a few boards in a row. It only has a single stage pump so it takes a few minutes longer to inflate a board.

Outdoor Master released a new version of the Dolphin pump called the Dolphin 2 in 2023. What has changed for the Dolphin 2 from the Dolphin?

  • The Dolphin 2 can run for up to 45 continuously instead of 15 minutes. You can pump more boards
  • It is a little faster than the original Dolphin. This is noticable when inflating large boards up to 20 psi
  • It’s quieter. It has a lower pitched sound than before.
  • It has a screw on hose instead of twist fitting
  • It has a plug in power cord instead of fixed power cord

The Dolphin costs $65.99 on Outdoor Master’s website. With our discount code ERO2022 you can drop the price to $59.40. The Dolphin is also available on Amazon.

Size and weight

I can easily hold the Dolphin 2 SUP electric pump in the palm of my hand. It is 10.25 X 6.25 X 5 Inches. It weighs about 2 lbs. The Dolphin has a shorter air hose than the Shark and Whale Pumps to go along with the smaller size. The Dolphin easily fits into the bag along with your paddleboard and all the accessories. It doesn’t add too much weight either. It has a convenient carry handle attached to the top as well.

12 volt power

The pump has a 12 volt plug for use with the 12 volt outlet in your car. The power cable is about 10 feet long so you can get the pump close to your board. The plug has a built in 10 amp fuse. You can replace it by unscrewing the metal end of the 12 volt plug.

Stand Up Paddle board compatibility

The Dolphin will work with almost any paddleboard or other water sports inflatables out there. It has the following valve adapters. H3/HR, C7, Boston, Pinch and 805. This will cover almost every inflatable paddleboard and kayak out there. Most inflatable paddleboards use H3 or Halkey Roberts plugs which this pump has. It will work with any SereneLife, Funwater, DAMA, Coolwave, Outdoor Master/Chasing Blue, iRocker, Red Paddle Co, Starboard, and many others.

Max pressure

This pump can inflate up to 20 psi. Most paddleboards inflate to around 15psi so it gives you some extra power. It won’t struggle to get you to 15psi.

Inflate only

The Outdoor Maser Dolphin can only inflate paddle boards. It does not have a deflate port that the Shark and Whale have.

Several Boards at a time

The manual included with the pump states that you can run the pump up to 45 minutes before it needs a 10 minute break. We have inflated 3 boards in a row with our Dolphin and it didn’t overheat or slow down. I’m not sure why you would ever want to inflate more than 3 boards in a row. The Dolphin 2 isn’t the fastest pump in the world and it I would get more than 1 of them and a battery power supply before waiting for it to inflate 4 boards.

Digital Display and Controls

The Dolphin 2 has a digital display for real time pressure monitoring in either PSI or Bar. It has 4 button controls for easy operation. It has 2 buttons for setting pressure. 1 button for switching between PSI and Bar. 1 button for power/starting and stopping the pump. It’s very intuitive and easy to use. Just set the desired pressure and hit the power button. It will automatically stop when you reach the target pressure.

Using the pump

We have spent a lot of time with Outdoor Master electric paddle board pumps. They are all reliable and easy to use. The Dolphin is the smallest, lightest, and cheapest of the bunch. It uses a similar high pressure pump to inflate the boards. It does not have a high volume first stage so it takes a few minutes longer to inflate than the other boards.

We hooked up the pump to a 10’6″ by 33″ all around paddle board. This is a typical $250-$300 paddleboard similar to those sold by Serenelife, DAMA, and Funwater. We inflated it to 14 psi. It took 9 minutes and 27 seconds to inflate. This is about 30 sseconds faster than our original Dolphin. For comparison, it takes the bigger Outdoor Master Shark 2 8 minutes and 40 seconds to inflate the same board to 14 psi.

It takes me 7 minutes and 53 seconds to inflate this board by hand using the supplied double action pump.

Inflating boards to 20 psi

We have a 12’6″ x 30″ touring board that can be inflated to 20 psi. We hooked up the Dolphin to it to try out the 20 psi max pressure claim. The Dolphin had no trouble pumping it up to it’s 20 psi max pressure. It took 11 minutes and 23 seconds to pump this board up to 15 psi (52 seconds faster than original Dolphin) and 14 minutes and 36 seconds (1 minute and 54 seconds faster than orignal Dolphin) to get it to 20 psi.

The Dolphin needs 1-3 minutes longer than a 2 stage pump such as the Outdoor Master Shark 2 to pump up most boards. It takes 2 to 6 minutes longer than hand pumping depending on the size of the board and target pressure. It saves a lot of work and you’re not exhausted before you even start paddling.

Below is a table showing inflation times for the pumps we have tested.

Electric Pump 10’6 x 32.5″ x 6″ All Around Board 12’6″ x 30″ x 6″ Touring Board 12’6″ x 30″ x 6″ Touring Board

How many boards can it pump in a row?

The Dolphin pump is compact and small and does not have an external cooling fan. It can pump continuously for up to 45 minutes before needing a 10 minute cool down. This will inflate 4 to 5 boards depending on the board. It does have an overheat protection circuit in it to prevent damage if you do overheat it trying to do too much.

Noise

The Dolphin 2 only operates in high pressure air compressor mode which is the noisy mode of any electric paddleboard pump. They did make it quieter than the original Dolphin. It has a noticeably lower pitched sound to it which makes it more tolerable. It’s still loud but not quite as loud.

The Verdict

The Outdoor Master Dolphin 2 is a great small cheap SUP pump. It is the perfect companion to go with any SUP paddle board. It’s small and lightweight making it easier to store in a paddleboard bag. It doesn’t cost much so you won’t feel like you are spending as much on a pump as you did your board. It gives up a few things compared to more expensive pumps. It keeps the reliability and ability to inflate to 20 PSI which are the most important features. If you hate hand pumping your board and want a cheap electric pump, give the Dolphin a try.
