6 Tips for SUP Yoga - A Beginner’s Guide
SUP yoga is a wonderful way to deepen your practice and immerse yourself in the beauty of the outdoors. So what are our best tips for SUP yoga?
In this post, we’re going to discover SUP yoga together as well as let you know our best tips for SUP yoga for the best start to your practice.
What is SUP yoga?
SUP yoga is exactly what it sounds like - practicing yoga on a stand-up paddleboard floating on a body of water! A fairly new method of practicing, SUP yoga has gained popularity due to the challenge, fun, and deeper connection with nature that it offers.
How do you do SUP yoga?
Even the most experienced yogis can find SUP yoga a little challenging at first. After all, it requires a lot more balance than styles of yoga that you practice on solid ground.
Group classes are a great introduction to SUP yoga. That way, you’ll have a yoga teacher there to guide you through the best ways to get started on your SUP yoga journey. Another reason it’s easier to practice with a teacher is because the sequence of a class will vary slightly from what you might be used to at studio-based yoga classes.
But don’t worry, we’ve got some of the best tips for you regardless of how you choose to begin SUP yoga!
Tips for SUP yoga
1. Strengthen your core
You’ll need a lot of core strength to help you balance on your SUP board whilst practicing yoga. Spend a little time every day practicing core-strengthening exercises such as sit-ups and planks.
2. Connect
Take some time before you start moving through poses to connect to your breath and the ground (or water!) beneath you. Centering yourself becomes even more crucial when practicing on a somewhat unreliable surface…
3. Find the center of the board
The center of the board is going to be the easiest place to keep your balance and ensure that the board stays as steady as possible. Take some time to find the center of the board before you begin.
4. Start slow
It might take your body a little while to get used to practicing SUP yoga on a board, so move slowly through poses, taking your time with each and moving your body to balance.
5. Practice low poses
Whilst standing poses tend to be the preferred yoga poses for beginners, when practicing SUP yoga you might find that lower poses such as crow pose and boat pose are easier - at least when it comes to balancing.

6. Have fun with it
Keep a smile on your face and know that, at some point, you’re probably going to fall off… The idea is to have fun! Enjoy the sound of the water around you and be proud of yourself for experimenting with this new style of yoga!
